Real Madrid star Eder Militao believes his performances this season shows he’s worth the €50million spent on signing him from Porto in 2019.

When Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos left last summer, there was fear that Real Madrid’s back line would suffer.

However, the partnership of Militao and David Alaba in the heart of the Real Madrid defence ensured the team remained one of La Liga’s most reliable defences on the way to a title triumph.

Militao also started every game as Real Madrid won the Champions League last season.

“When [Ramos and Varane] left, people stressed because they had made so much history at the club,” Militao told Marca on vacation in Ibiza.

“I thought that my time had come to do things well and show the fans, as well as the whole world, that they could also count on me. And I have put together great displays and shown why I am at Real Madrid.

“I have demonstrated [why he cost €50m]. Things did not go well when I arrived because I had two centre-backs ahead of me who had been together for a long time. Now I have shown the reason for my signing.”

Militao made 50 appearances across all competitions this season, contributing two goals and three assists as Real Madrid won the La Liga and Champions League.

Following his brilliant performances for Real Madrid last season, Militao is set to be rewarded with an improved contract from Real Madrid.

Militao still has more than three years left to run on his contract at Bernabeu, but he is believed to be one of the lowest-paid members of the first-team squad.

According to Goal, Real Madrid want to upgrade Militao’s salary to reflect his role with the team.

After Militao joined Real Madrid from Porto in 2019, he made just 15 appearances for the club in his debut season with Varane and Ramos as first-choice centre-backs.

He made just 14 appearances in his second season at the club before being trusted with a regular place in the first-team in 2021-22 following the exit of Varane and Ramos.

Militao has earned 22 caps for his country and will be an important part of Tite’s squad when they head to Qatar for the World Cup.
