Real Madrid star Marco Asensio reportedly prefers a move to Italian champions AC Milan over Premier League side Liverpool.
Asensio has just one year left on his Real Madrid contract and wants to leave the club this summer as he isn’t a guaranteed starter at Real Madrid.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is reportedly a huge admirer of Real Madrid star Asensio and wants to take the Spain international to England but Asensio has his doubts about a move to Liverpool.
According to Sport, Asensio is uncertain of a move to Liverpool owing to concerns over a starting place in Liverpool’s XI.
Liverpool are looking to strengthen their forward options after the departure of Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich.
But Asensio sees no point leaving Real Madrid where he isn’t a guaranteed starter for Liverpool where he won’t also be a guaranteed starter.
Liverpool currently have Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Luis Díaz, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez, which is too much competition for Asensio who would like a destination where he is guaranteed to be the main man.
With the array of attackers at Liverpool, Asensio believes a move to AC Milan will be more beneficial to his career.
The Italian champions do not possess the same depth as Liverpool with Asensio likely to be more of a key player in their squad than he would be under Klopp.
However, AC Milan do not have the financial might to match Liverpool in terms of the fee to Real Madrid and wages to Asensio.
Asensio reportedly earns around €160,000 a week at Real Madrid and AC Milan will be reportedly unable to afford that.
Asensio this month told reporters that there were ‘possibilities’ of a move away from Real Madrid this summer.
“I have one year left on my contract. Now, I am focused on the national team,” Asensio said.
“When this is over, we will talk. We will see what I will do with my future.
“I think there are possibilities. There is also the option to stay and fulfil my contract year.
“Rumours are part of football, and more so at Real Madrid. High-level players are always associated with it. It’s something we have to live with.”
