Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano has claimed Real Madrid were lucky to win the Champions League last season.

Soriano claims Real Madrid were fortunate to beat Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool.

Manchester City have never won the Champions League and Soriano claims the Premier League side needs luck like Real Madrid to win the Champions League.

Sorriano the Dr. Football podcast: “The Champions League is a trophy that we want, but we know that it is subject to a bit of luck and we are not obsessed.

“People talk today about the success that Madrid have had in recent years, and I think it would be fair to say that they were a bit lucky.

“Perhaps I could say that they deserved to lose against PSG, against Chelsea, against us or against Liverpool.”

Sorriano did go on to add that Real endured their fair share of bad luck on a European stage in the 1980s, saying: “People don’t remember that in the 80s and 90s [Real] had a fantastic team, one of the best in history, with [Emilio] Butragueno and La Quinta, and they could not win it.

“Milan eliminated them every year. So they were somewhat lucky now, but they were also very unlucky for years.”

Meanwhile, Fiorentina are positive about signing Luka Jovic from Real Madrid this summer.

Fiorentina and Real Madrid are holding direct talks over a possible loan deal for Jovic.

Fiorentina want Real Madrid to pay part of the out-of-favour Serbian forward’s wages, with the 24 year old open to moving to Italy.

Jovic has failed to make a consistent impact in Madrid following his highly anticipated €60m move from Eintracht Frankfurt in 2019.

The Serbian international has scored just three La Liga goals for Real Madrid since joining the club three years ago.

Real Madrid are open to the striker leaving this summer.
