Real Madrid are surprised by the decision of Toni Kroos not to extend his contract with the club, according to AS.
The 32 year old midfielder has just one year left on his contract and was offered a contract with Real Madrid until 2024.
However, the German international is unwilling to extend his contract with Champions League winners Real Madrid.
Kroos will reportedly wait for his contract to run down in 2023 before assessing his situation.
Kroos only wants to sign a new Real Madrid contract if he still remains an important player next season following the arrival of Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco.
The German midfielder is aware that younger midfielders like Tchouameni, Camavinga and Valverde will provide serious competition next season and the way the 2022-23 season pans out will be instrumental in any decision making process the German will have.
If Kroos stays in the starting eleven and performs well next year, the chances that he will sign a new Real Madrid contract increases.
If he makes the bench more, the chances of him leaving Real Madrid next summer also increases.
Real Madrid reportedly believes Kroos is contemplating three options: a short renewal at the end of the campaign, for one or two years, retire at 33 like Zinedine Zidane or leave Europe for the MLS.
In his eight seasons at the Bernabeu, Kroos has won 17 titles: four Champions Leagues, three Leagues, three European Super Cups, four Club World Cups and three Spanish Super Cups.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid have identified 18 year old Brazilian striker Matheus Nascimento as a long-term replacement for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.
Benzema is 34 years old already and Real Madrid are beginning to plan for a future without the France international striker.
Real Madrid scout Juni Calafat recommended the 18 year old Nascimento as an ideal replacement for Benzema in future.
Calafat was successful in bringing Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo Goes and Fede Valverde to Real Madrid, three key players in Carlo Ancelotti’s team.
The 18 year old Nascimento currently plays for Brazilian club Botafogo.
