Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior was racially abused by some shameful Atletico Madrid fans ahead of Sunday’s derby against Atletico Madrid, according to The Athletic.
Hundreds of Atletico fans outside their Civitas Metropolitano stadium were filmed chanting, “Eres un mono, Vinicius eres un mono (You are a monkey, Vinicius you are a monkey).”
Similar chants aimed at Vinicius were audible inside the stadium once the game got underway.
The stadium announcer at the Metropolitano had to call for respect for all the players on the pitch at one point in the first-half.
Before the game at the Metropolitano, an Atletico fan was pictured with what appeared to be a toy monkey with a white Real shirt on.
This shameful racial abuse of Vinicius Junior was sparked by comments made by Pedro Bravo, president of the Spanish agents’ association, on El Chiringuito when talking about the Brazilian’s goal celebration.
Bravo said: “You have to respect your opponents.
“When you score a goal, if you want to dance Samba, you should go to the sambodrome in Brazil.
“You have to respect your mates and stop playing the monkey.”
The statement from Bravo received widespread backlash, including from Brazil internationals and Brazil legend Pele.
