Former Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has hailed the qualities of Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema after he won the 2022 Ballon d’Or.

As reported by L’Équipe, Mourinho said: “Karim has a great personality. He is a guy obsessed with the team, not with himself, or with wanting to score more than A, B, or C.

“His Ballon d’Or is the natural result of his formidable evolution, more than the result of a personal obsession.

“When I was his coach, he was a talented footballer in search of his identity as a very high-level player with the right ambitions and the right physical condition.

“I wanted him to grow as quickly as possible, and I was hard on him. I corrected him on all the little details. I don’t know if I had an influence on his development. Only he knows that.”

He continued: “He is a phenomenal footballer at the peak of his potential, physical, mental, and tactical abilities.

“Karim is a multifunctional player. If there were three Karims in a big team, they would all play: one would be the scorer, the other a leader, and the last one would play on the left side.”
