Former Liverpool star Danny Murphy has claimed Thibaut Courtois would never win the Ballon d’Or because the award is meant for ‘creative footballers’.

Courtois picked up the Yashin award for Best Goalkeeper and also finished seventh in the overall vote for the main Ballon d’Or gong.

However, Courtois was less than impressed with his place in the rankings and gave a scathing analysis of goalkeepers’ chances in the competition after the ceremony.

“I think them having their own award is fine,” Murphy said on TalkSPORT.

“What could a goalkeeper possibly do? If you look back at the last decade, to surpass the likes of [Lionel] Messi and [Cristiano] Ronaldo’s contributions [would be hard].”

“The award is generally given to creative footballers,” Murphy continued.

“But the point I’m making is the percentage of players that have won the Ballon d’Or over the years, very few would be of the defensive kind.”

The Ballon d’Or has only been awarded to one goalkeeper since its inception in 1956 – Russian legend Lev Yashin on 1963.
