Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is one of the founding fathers of the European Super League.
Perez had fought for a breakaway league for the European top clubs, and during the initial unveiling of the Super League, Perez tried to hype it up on Spanish show El Chiringuito.
An online press release was also dished out, and a website was also created for it.
However, the ESL idea quickly flopped after the Premier League sides backed out – with Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid being the only ones remaining.
Barcelona veteran Gerard Pique has revealed how he thought of the ESL at the time, claiming that Florentino Perez move was poorly planned.
He told Twitch streamer Ibai: “When Florentino talks to you about the Super League and that people consume differently, I agree with that. But I don’t think the Super League is the solution. It’s a different thing.
“The presentation of the Super League, it was a big s***show. Because I hold Florentino in the highest regard, he surprised me [in the way that he did it]. He has changed Madrid.
“He was wrong when he signed the stars at the time and when he came back, his work has been praiseworthy. His presentation at El Chiringuito, him alone… my head exploded. I don’t know what he wanted to achieve. I didn’t understand it.”
