Fabio Capello gives his honest verdict on Karim Benzema missing the World Cup

A lot has been said about Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and France head coach Didier Deschamps.

Benzema ended up not playing at the World Cup due to an initial injury, but could have played deep into the competition if the coach wanted to keep him.

The Ballon d’Or holder is yet to speak about the incident, neither has Deschamps.

Meanwhile, former Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello has supported Didier Deschamps’ decision to snub Karim Benzema, even though he believes Benzema could have won France the World Cup.

Asked if Deschamps was wrong to ignore the Ballon d’Or winner, Capello said: “No, I did the same with Savicevic before the Intercontinental Cup Final in 1993.

“On the morning of the game, he told me that he was ready to play after I had prepared everything with Raducioiu. Out of respect, I didn’t let him play. I thought it was a fair decision for the team.

“Now the question remains: would Milan and France have won one more trophy with Savicevic and Benzema? Perhaps, yes.”
