Benfica have released an official statement regarding the rumours swirling around their midfield star, Enzo Fernandez.
The 21-year-old, who was recently crowned ‘Young Player of The Tournament’ at the FIFA World Cup, has been linked with a transfer away from Benfica after his heroics at the competition.
Real Madrid, Liverpool, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain have been reported to be interested in Fernandez, who only joined Benfica in the summer.
President of the Portuguese club, Rui Costa, was recently credited with saying about Fernandez: “We don’t want to give up Enzo Fernandez in January, but we are willing to please the boy in the event of a €120 million offer.”
However, the club have now denied the quoted comment, and insist that they want to keep the World Cup winner until the end of the 2022-23 season.
Their new statement reads: “We insist saying that our intention is to keep Enzo here until the end of the season.
“Benfica clarify that our president Rui Costs never spoke to DAZN about the situation of Enzo Fernández”.
Fernandez reportedly has a release clause of about €120 million.
