Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was critical of the referee’s performance in the La Liga clash against Villarreal.
Madrid lost the tie 2-1 away at the Estadio de la Ceramica on Saturday, and Courtois believes the referee was unfair.
Karim Benzema had scored from the spot to level the scores for Madrid after the hour mark. But the referee would give a penalty to the host three minutes later for a handball by David Alaba.
Reacting to the penalty decision, Courtois called it a ‘shame’, as he claimed that the decision was unfair.
“We were unlucky to concede the first goal. We levelled the score with the penalty and then they whistled another penalty, which I think was wrong. It’s a shame,” Thibaut Courtois said after the loss to Villarreal.
“I didn’t talk to the referee but last week the ball hit the hand of a Real Valladolid defender [and it wasn’t a penalty]. David Alaba had nowhere to put his hands, he used his hand for support. Let’s see if they will use this case as an example next summer and explain it.
“The referee whistled the first penalty and then gave another one to compensate for it. We should’ve been calmer.”
