Real Madrid were beaten 2-1 by Villarreal in Madrid’s last La Liga outing.

Interestingly, no Spaniards featured in this game, for the first time in the club’s history. Dani Carvajal who should have featured, had a minor injury and was left out of the squad.

Reacting to that decision, Ancelotti said: “Fielding no Spanish players last time out was a coincidence, it’s a random thing.

“Real Madrid are a universal team, we can have players from all over the world.”

Against Villarreal, Ancelotti started three Frenchmen, two Brazilians, two Germans, one Uruguayan, one Austrian, one Croatian and one Belgian started. Marco Asensio and Lucas Vazquez were the only two Spaniards to come on from the bench.
