Real Madrid followed up a 3-2 comeback victory over Villarreal in the Copa del Rey, with another difficult win over Athletic Bilbao away from home.
Bilbao were indeed difficult opponents at the Estadio San Mames. However, Karim Benzema broke the deadlock in the 24th minute against the run of play.
Marco Asensio’s high lofted header found Benzema, who wasted no time with a first time left-footed volley that found the back of the net.
Athletic Bilbao would continue to mount pressure after the game, and Thibaut Courtois was called to action a number of times.
The Madrid backline stood firm, and defensive midfielder Eduardo Camavinga was indeed very helpful at the back.
The win got sealed for Madrid in the 90th minute, as substitute Toni Kroos finished off a fine counter attacking move to seal all three points.
The win ensured the Los Blancos are 3 points behind Barcelona who beat Getafe 1-0 earlier today.
