Real Madrid are champions of the world, as the Los Blancos defeated Al Hilal 5-3 to win the Club World Cup final.
It was a record five times that Real Madrid have emerged as world champions.
Vinicius Junior and Federico Valverde both scored a brace, while Karim Benzema also scored a goal, to help Madrid to a fine victory.
Speaking just after the Club World Cup final against Al-Hilal, Carlo Ancelotti said: “We are very happy.
“For the 8th time Real Madrid is world champion. It was what we had to do.”
So what did Ancelotti mean by 8th time world champion?
The reason is, in 1960, 1998 and 2002, Madrid won three Intercontinental Cups. The competition is considered a predecessor to the Club World Cup, but it isn’t, as it saw the winners of the Champions League and Copa Libertadores face each other.
The Intercontinental Cup had only South American and European teams participating so it couldn’t be termed a ‘world cup’.
