Thibaut Courtois made a horrendous error early in the first-half against Liverpool, which left Mohamed Salah with the simple task of slotting the ball home.

Courtois made the error in the 14th minute, and it put Madrid 2-0 behind.

The Los Blancos would however come back to win the tie 5-2.

Speaking about his blunder, Courtois admitted it came as a result of poor control.

The Belgian said: “The truth is that it was a bit of bad luck screwing it up like that.

“I controlled it well and at first I wanted to pass it, but I saw that Salah was standing still and I said well, I’ll pass it to the right, but it bounces off my knee.”

Courtois admitted that the first-half brace from Vinicius Junior was very important.

He added: “The goal from Vinicius makes us breathe and then Alisson does the same, and we are strong on the counter.”

Courtois also hailed the Liverpool fans for applauding football greats Luka Modric and Karim Benzema as they were taken off late in the game.

He said: “It’s my first time playing Champions League football at Anfield when fans are in the stadium and the fact that there was applause from Liverpool supporters for Luka and Karim just proves that people here know how to appreciate guys who are great players.”
