Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool’s defending against Real Madrid was the reason they conceded five goals against the reigning world champions on Tuesday night.

Liverpool were 2-0 up after 14 minutes, but ended up losing the tie 5-2.

Klopp bemoaned the defeat after such a wonderful start by his side.

Speaking to beIN Sports about the defeat, Jurgen Klopp said: “It was a super start – we had everything we wanted – being 2-0 up – feeling great – the atmosphere was outstanding – then they scored.

“We should have defended it earlier and better. Definitely better. The second goal for them was a slapstick goal – we have to accept it but I still felt really good after the first half.

“I am really not sure if their third goal was a foul but even then, we had to defend the free-kick better. That was a real knock.

“We lost too many balls in the wrong moments – I couldn’t remember one pass to Darwin behind the lines in the second half.

“We couldn’t continue the momentum. We played completely into their hands. We still want to win the game in Madrid.”
