Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos recently announced his retirement from his international career.
The 36-year-old has quit the international stage, after new Spanish head coach Luis de la Fuente told Ramos that he didn’t count on him for national team duties.
Ramos was disappointed that his age was a yardstick for his retirement rather than his performance.
Ramos took time to hail the likes of Luka Modric, Pepe and Lionel Messi who are all active on the international stage, but didn’t mention his ex teammate Cristiano Ronaldo who’s yet to retire.
He wrote: “Being younger or older is not a virtue or a defect, it is only a temporary characteristic that is not necessarily related to performance or capacity.
“I look with admiration and envy at Luka Modric, Leo Messi, at Pepe… the essence, tradition, values, meritocracy and justice in football.
“Unfortunately, it will not be so for me, because football is not always fair and football is never just football.”
