It seems Carlo Ancelotti and his boys have given up on finishing the La Liga season on a high, even though we know the title has long been lost.

Real Madrid were embarrassed away at the Estadio Municipal de Montilivi, as Girona won the tie 4-2, with Taty Castellanos scoring all four goals to hammer Real Madrid away from home.

Carlo Ancelotti slammed his team’s performance after the game, and also apologised to the fans.

He said: “It is difficult or rather easy to explain what happened. We were not as intense as in the recent games.

“We lacked effort and lost too many balls in transition. We were good on the ball but left too much free space without it.

“A message to the fans? I understand that it hurts, we apologize. We are also hurt. But the fans know that we will show up for the cup final and [Champions League] semi-final.”
