FIFA’s chief of Global Football Development, Arsene Wenger, has sided with Carlo Ancelotti, who claimed that Manchester City’s goal shouldn’t have stood.

Kevin De Bruyne scored in the 67th minute, but the ball crossed the line in the build-up to the goal.

Ancelotti said: “The ball was off the pitch [in the build-up to Manchester City’s goal]. That’s it. Technology said it. I don’t understand why VAR didn’t check it. The referee didn’t pay attention to many things tonight.”

Former Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger, who now works with FIFA, said: “VAR should have checked Bernardo Silva’s controlling the ball out of play.

“At the moment VAR cannot check the sidelines but we have a chip in the ball so we can see.”
