Real Madrid have won their first six games of the season, but even Carlo Ancelotti would admit that the win over Union Berlin was one he had almost lost hope on.
It took a 94th minute goal from Jude Bellingham to secure a win for the Los Blancos.
Speaking after the game, Ancelotti admitted it was a very difficult tie, but went on to hail his team for being resilient.
The Italian boss reserved praise particularly for defender, Antonio Rudiger. The German ensured that Real didn’t concede as they chased on for a win.
“The game was planned like this, complicated,” Ancelotti told the media.
“When you have opportunities you can fail. We have lacked success, but we have also had bad luck: the bar hit by Joselu and Rodrygo
“We controlled the ball despite the low block from Union Berlin, who defended well. They didn’t leave us any spaces in the final third.
“We were good at recovering from set pieces. We were able to score before, yes. But scoring at the end is important.
“This is the spirit of this t-shirt. A draw would say the same, because the team has stood up to the end.
“The idea is to be patient, but not too patient. They are games like that. Trap matches. I remember Sheriff’s, where we lost at home, it was this type of game. It is a merit, Rüdiger has been outstanding.”
