For the first time this season, Carlo Ancelotti opted to start veteran midfielders Toni Kroos and Luka Modric In a game.

The Real Madrid boss went for a surprise system that also had striker Joselu on the bench, with the attacking duties left for Rodrygo and Jude Bellingham.

Ancelotti’s idea didn’t work, as two first-half goals from Atletico Madrid all but killed the tie.

Explaining the reason for his starting selection, Ancelotti said: “By playing Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, I tried to have a bit more control in the middle.

“I also wanted to me to rest Tchouameni who has played many matches, including the ones for the national team.”

Real Madrid will play host to Las Palmas on Wednesday.
