Federico Valverde struck the winning goal against Napoli at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium.

The 24-year-old hit a thunderbolt shot from distance that crashed off the crossbar, off the keeper’s back and into the goal to make it 2-3 for the Los Blancos.

Valverde was pleased with the outcome of the game.

He said after the match: “It was a great match and the weather was spectacular. It’s the first time I’ve played here. But what’s most important is that we won.

“We dominated the first half, but we were up against it in the first few minutes. Then they scored a penalty and we found ourselves behind, but we managed to push on and get the win.

“We have to take a self-critical look at ourselves. We played a good game, but they got into the game because of one of their goals. They pressed and that’s normal, but we have a good team capable of playing better in those minutes.”

The goal was however recorded as an own goal, and Valverde was unhappy about that.

He said: “I was a bit sad because I looked at the scoreboard and it didn’t say Valverde.

“One of the opposition players told me that the goal wasn’t mine, but the important thing is that we got the three points.”
