Real Madrid defender David Alaba got off injured in the first half of the game against Villarreal.
Alaba started the tie at the Santiago Bernabeu, but was subbed off in the 35th minute, as he was helped off the pitch after suffering an injury.
Real Madrid have now confirmed the severity of David Alaba’s injury, and it’s just as bad as first feared.
The 31-year-old defender has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, and will be out for a long time.
Speaking after the game, Ancelotti reacted to the ACL injury suffered by the Austrian.
He said: “I haven’t spoken with him. The medical report says he’s ruptured his cruciate ligament.
“We’re really sad about it because he’s another player we’ll lose. I’ve never had three of my players get cruciate injuries within three months.
“What the team has to do is exactly what it’s been doing so far, with all the injuries we’ve had. We’ve done more than what anyone believed we were capable of. Despite the problems, this team fights, digs in, plays some great football and shows extraordinary commitment.
“That’s the only way to fill in for all the guys who are out injured. We’ll see what can be done in the coming days.”
