It was a sad night for Real Madrid defender David Alaba, as the Austrian got off injured in the first half of the game against Villarreal.
Alaba started the tie at the Santiago Bernabeu, but was subbed off in the 35th minute, as he was helped off the pitch after suffering an injury.
Real Madrid have now confirmed the severity of David Alaba’s injury, and it’s just as bad as first feared.
The 31-year-old defender has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, and will be out for a long time.
It’s the third time this season, a Real Madrid player will suffer an ACL injury, following Thibaut Courtois and Eder Militao’s cases.
Carlo Ancelotti has now reacted to the injury cases, and admitted he’s experiencing it for the first time.
“I’ve never had three of my players get cruciate injuries inside three months,” said the Real Madrid coach.
