The Belgian has been sidelined for the entirety of the 2023-24 season due to an ACL injury that occurred before the season’s first match against Athletic Bilbao.
Courtois had been on the path to recovery in recent months and was expected to make his much-anticipated return to action for Real Madrid after the March international break.

Unfortunately, he experienced another significant setback on Tuesday, injuring the internal meniscus in his right knee, which is different from the knee he injured in August.
“Our player Thibaut Courtois underwent successful surgery today for a tear in the internal meniscus of his right knee under the supervision of the Real Madrid Medical Services. Courtois will begin his recovery process in the coming days,” read a statement from Real Madrid on Wednesday morning.
The estimated recovery time for the goalkeeper’s recent injury is between two to three months, which shifts his focus towards returning next season.
Since joining Real Madrid in 2018, Courtois has played in 230 matches across all competitions for the club, featuring in 49 games during the 2022-23 season.
At 31 years old, he has secured an impressive collection of honors with Real Madrid, including two La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey, two Spanish Super Cups, a Champions League title, a UEFA Super Cup, and a Club World Cup.
With Courtois sidelined, Andriy Lunin is expected to continue as Real Madrid’s primary goalkeeper for the rest of the season.
Earlier in the season, Lunin shared duties with Kepa Arrizabalaga, who is on loan from Chelsea, but the Ukrainian has since solidified his position as the preferred choice in goal.
It appears unlikely that Kepa will make a permanent move to Real Madrid this summer, with expectations pointing towards his return to Chelsea once the loan concludes.
