France President Emmanuel Macron has indicated that he is attempting to persuade Real Madrid to release Kylian Mbappe for the Paris Olympics.
Mbappe is expected to join Real Madrid this summer as a free agent, a move that has been widely reported as nearly confirmed.
Macron has expressed his intention to request that Mbappe’s likely new club allow the French star to participate in the Olympics, which will overlap with Real Madrid’s preseason training camp.
Speaking to the press, the French president said [via GFFN]: “Will Mbappe play with France at the Olympics? I hope. In any, case I have put the maximum pressure on his so-called future club.”
FIFA does not recognize the Olympics as an official tournament and hence, Real Madrid are not obliged to let Mbappe join the national team.
