Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior has issued an apology following his red card in the thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Valencia at Mestalla on Friday, the first LaLiga match of 2025.
Hugo Duro had put Valencia ahead in the first half before a chaotic second period unfolded. Jude Bellingham missed a penalty after hitting the post, and Kylian Mbappé had a goal ruled out for offside. The drama intensified when Vinícius was sent off in the 79th minute for striking Valencia goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski.
Despite being down a man, Real Madrid turned the game around in dramatic fashion. Substitute Luka Modric equalized in the 85th minute, and Bellingham redeemed himself with a stunning winner in added time, securing Madrid’s place at the top of the LaLiga table. The victory puts them two points clear of Atlético Madrid, although Atlético have a game in hand.
After the match, Vinícius took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his regret, posting: “Sorry, and thanks team!”
The Brazilian winger’s reaction to the red card was one of anger, as he appeared ready to confront referee Cesar Soto Grado. However, teammate Antonio Rüdiger and goalkeeping coach Luis Llopis intervened to restrain him and prevent the situation from escalating further.
This incident marks the second time Vinícius has been sent off at Mestalla. His previous red card occurred during Real Madrid’s 1-0 defeat to Valencia on May 21, 2023. That game was marred by controversy, with Vinícius confronting a group of home fans who had racially abused him.
While his passion and determination are hallmarks of his game, this latest red card serves as a reminder of the fine line he walks. Madridistas will hope Vinícius can channel his fiery temperament into delivering match-winning performances as the team fights to maintain their position at the top of the league.
For now, his apology and the team’s resilience in securing the win ensure the focus remains on the positives from a night of high drama at Mestalla.
