Real Madrid have reportedly declined the opportunity to sign Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, despite the Netherlands international being offered to the La Liga giants for the summer of 2025. According to Spanish outlet Relevo, the 33-year-old’s agents reached out to Real Madrid’s management to gauge interest in bringing the centre-back to the Santiago Bernabéu, but the proposal was turned down.

The report reveals that Van Dijk’s representatives were keen on a move to Real Madrid, especially after a stellar season with Liverpool, where Arne Slot’s team currently sits atop the Premier League table, six points clear of Arsenal with a game in hand. However, Real Madrid’s hierarchy decided against pursuing the Dutch defender, citing a preference for profiles better suited to the club’s long-term defensive strategy.

Relevo stated, “The player’s agents contacted Madrid’s management to inform them of the centre-back’s willingness to join the Bernabéu from the summer of 2025. They applied to reinforce an area of the pitch where they have suffered too many problems in recent years with injuries such as those of Militao or Alaba.”

While Real Madrid have faced challenges in their defensive line due to persistent injuries to key players like Éder Militão and David Alaba, the club’s decision reflects a desire to focus on younger or more versatile options. Despite Van Dijk’s availability on a free transfer, Real Madrid are reportedly “working on possible signings” that align more closely with their vision for the future.

Van Dijk, who is out of contract at Liverpool at the end of the current campaign, has been a crucial figure in the Reds’ resurgence under new manager Arne Slot. Nevertheless, Real Madrid seem to have their sights set elsewhere as they continue to rebuild their squad with younger talents.

This development highlights Real Madrid’s meticulous approach to squad building under Florentino Pérez and the technical staff. While Van Dijk’s leadership and experience are undeniable, Real Madrid appear committed to investing in players who better fit the club’s tactical and physical demands.

Real Madrid fans can trust that the club’s management is focused on securing the best possible reinforcements to maintain their dominance in Europe and La Liga. With the likes of Militão set to return from injury and a potential influx of new talent, Real Madrid’s defensive future looks promising, even without Van Dijk in their plans.
