Kylian Mbappe delivered a scintillating performance, scoring twice to lead Real Madrid to an impressive 4-1 comeback victory over Las Palmas on Sunday. The win propelled Los Blancos to the top of the LaLiga standings, overtaking city rivals Atletico Madrid, who suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat to Leganes on Saturday. Real now sit on 46 points, two ahead of Atletico, with Barcelona trailing by seven points after their 1-1 draw with Getafe.
The match got off to a shocking start as Las Palmas stunned the Bernabeu faithful by scoring just 25 seconds in. Fabio Silva converted a Sandro cross from close range, leaving Carlo Ancelotti’s men with an early mountain to climb. However, Real Madrid responded with intent, piling on the pressure until Mbappe equalised from the penalty spot in the 18th minute after Rodrygo was brought down in the box.
With Vinicius Jr serving the first of a two-match suspension following his red card against Valencia, Mbappe took center stage and delivered one of his finest performances since joining from Paris Saint-Germain last summer. Linking up brilliantly with Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo, the Frenchman was a constant menace, forcing Las Palmas goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen into several vital saves.
Mbappe’s relentless work bore fruit in the 33rd minute. After his powerful effort was parried by Cillessen, Lucas Vazquez pounced on the rebound and set up Brahim Diaz for a simple tap-in to make it 2-1. Just three minutes later, Mbappe extended Real’s lead with a sensational first-time strike into the top corner following a perfect cross from Rodrygo.
Rodrygo added Real’s fourth goal in the 57th minute, finishing off a swift counter-attack that put the game beyond doubt. The visitors’ woes worsened in the 64th minute when substitute Benito Ramirez was shown a straight red card for a dangerous studs-up tackle on Lucas Vazquez.
Despite easing off in the closing stages, Real Madrid remained a threat. However, three late efforts from Mbappe, Bellingham, and Federico Valverde were ruled out by VAR for offside in the buildup.
The emphatic win underscored Real Madrid’s determination to reclaim their LaLiga crown, with Mbappe’s masterclass serving as a timely reminder of his world-class pedigree.
