Real Madrid defender David Alaba made a long anticipated return to action for Real Madrid on Sunday, as he came on as a substitute in the 76th minute of the 4-1 win over Las Palmas.

The game marked Alaba’s first appearance for Real Madrid in over a year, after a lengthy injury layoff.

The Austria international had been sidelined since December 2023, when he suffered an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) rupture in his left knee during a league game.

Upon his return to action on Sunday, Alaba expressed his joy and gratitude after making a successful return to action following a 399-day injury layoff.

“I’m very happy,” Alaba said, visibly emotional. “The last year was very hard for me, but I’ve worked very hard every day to be able to return.”

Alaba also thanked everyone involved in his rehabilitation process.

“Thanks to everyone, thanks to my team,” he said. “The journey was very hard.”
