Kylian Mbappe suffered a horror tackle from Espanyol’s Carlos Romero.
In what was supposed to be a breathtaking counter-attack, Mbappe had already used his blistering pace to overrun Romero, who struck his leg to stop the marauding run of the Frenchman.
The referee did not show a red card to Romero who went on to score the match winner.
After the game, Romero said: “I knew it was impossible to stop Kylian running, I stopped him as best I could, it was a bit ugly.
“I didn’t like it and I apologised to him.”
Real Madrid surprisingly lost the game 1-0 to struggling Espanyol who are ranked 17th in La Liga.
