Real Madrid secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Manchester City in their Champions League knockout stage first-leg clash at the Santiago Bernabéu.

After the game, Carlo Ancelotti detailed the tactical approach that helped Los Blancos overcome Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Italian tactician revealed that his strategy focused on disrupting City’s buildup play, particularly by putting pressure on goalkeeper Ederson.

“We looked to press high when Ederson had the ball, and to drop to a mid-block when he didn’t, with the forwards coming inside and our midfielders not looking to push,” Ancelotti explained.

That structured approach ensured Real Madrid remained compact defensively while also limiting City’s ability to play out from the back. Ancelotti also highlighted the importance of width and composure in possession.

He went on: “With the ball, we wanted to create width, make the most of our quality, use the ball well and not get frustrated with long balls. In the end, it all worked out.”

The plan paid off perfectly, as Ederson was directly responsible for one of Real Madrid’s goals and played a part in another. Ancelotti’s tactical masterclass ensured Los Blancos take a crucial lead into the second leg, keeping their Champions League dreams alive.
