Carlo Ancelotti has set the tone for Real Madrid’s crucial Round of 16 second-leg clash against Atletico Madrid, making it clear that his side is fully focused on securing victory without the need for penalties.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s showdown, Ancelotti expressed confidence in his team’s preparation and determination:

“We are doing well, we are motivated. It will be a difficult match, but we are confident that we will continue in this competition, which is special for us.”

Having faced Diego Simeone’s Atletico on numerous occasions, Ancelotti knows exactly what to expect:

“As far as I can remember, all the games we played against Atleti were close and competitive. Tomorrow will be exactly the same, decided by the small details.”

With a 2-1 advantage from the first leg, Los Blancos are in a strong position, but Ancelotti insists his team will not be complacent. The objective is clear—reach the quarter-finals, regardless of the opponent.

“We want to reach the quarter-finals, regardless of who the opponent is. The penalty shootout is not easy, because of the need to repeat the atmosphere and the psychological pressure.”

For now, Real Madrid’s focus remains on executing their game plan rather than worrying about potential penalties:

“We are not thinking about that at the moment. At the moment, we are focusing on how to organize the match well.”

The Italian tactician also emphasised how much the Champions League means to the club, highlighting the hunger to continue fighting for the trophy:

“It’s a match that allows us to continue dreaming, as we did in previous years.”

While this season’s Round of 16 fixtures have proven to be more challenging than in the past, Ancelotti remains confident in his squad’s ability to push forward:

“This year’s round of 16 is more complicated than in previous years, but we are still confident in our ability to keep fighting.”

With the second leg set to take place at the WandaMetropolitano, Real Madrid fans will be hoping to see their team secure a place in the next round without the drama of penalties. The stage is set for another thrilling Madrid derby under the lights of European football.
