Real Madrid secured a dramatic victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, but the aftermath saw Diego Simeone directing his frustration at the officiating, particularly over the disallowed penalty attempt by Julian Alvarez.
The Atletico Madrid coach took issue with the decision to rule out Alvarez’s penalty due to a double touch, which was detected by technology. Visibly frustrated in the post-match press conference, Simeone challenged journalists to confirm if they had actually seen the infraction themselves.
“Did you see Alvarez touch the ball twice?” he asked. “Raise your hands if you saw it.”
Despite his frustration, Simeone refused to blame luck for Atletico’s elimination, instead choosing to highlight his team’s effort.
“Luck? I don’t talk about luck. I want to talk about being proud of the team we have,” he stated.
Real Madrid ultimately triumphed in the penalty shootout, sending Atletico crashing out of the Champions League while reinforcing their own dominance in the competition.
