Clashes between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are always heated, and their latest Champions League encounter was no exception. The second leg of their play-off tie ended in controversy after the referee disallowed Julian Alvarez’s penalty in the post-match shootout due to a double touch on the ball.

The decision sparked a fierce debate among fans and pundits alike. Some insisted the ruling was fair and in line with the laws of the game, while others accused the officials of favouring Real Madrid.

Among those who have now weighed in on the incident is Los Blancos’ midfield maestro Luka Modric. The Croatian, a Ballon d’Or winner and one of football’s most respected figures, supported the referee’s call, emphasising that the decision was entirely in line with the rules.

“It seems to me a similar situation happened with Griezmann once—I can’t recall exactly when—but it’s the rule,” Modric said.

“I can’t remember precisely, but I think it wasn’t in a post-match shootout, just a regular penalty.”

While Atletico fans continue to express their frustration, Real Madrid’s focus remains on their Champions League journey. With the team advancing past their city rivals, the objective is clear—pursue another European title and cement their dominance on the biggest stage.
