As Real Madrid gear up for the Copa del Rey final, the focus is once again on manager Carlo Ancelotti’s handling of his goalkeepers—particularly the recurring case of Andriy Lunin. The Ukrainian shot-stopper, who has been instrumental throughout the Copa del Rey campaign, is reportedly set to miss out on the final after Thibaut Courtois declared himself fit and ready to play.

Lunin has started every Copa del Rey match this season, delivering composed and commanding performances. He’s also featured in 12 matches across all competitions, mostly during Courtois’ extended spell on the sidelines due to injury. Yet, history seems destined to repeat itself.

Just last season, Lunin played a vital role in helping Madrid lift La Liga and reach the Champions League final, only to be benched for Courtois when it mattered most—against Borussia Dortmund in the UCL final. It appears a similar script will play out again, despite Lunin’s consistency and professionalism.

Ancelotti’s unwillingness to fully back Lunin in decisive games has drawn criticism. While the Italian tactician insists that either goalkeeper could start, it’s clear Courtois remains his go-to man for finals, fitness permitting. This preference, although understandable given Courtois’ world-class pedigree, undermines Lunin’s impressive growth and contributions to the squad.

What makes this situation even more compelling is Lunin’s loyalty to the club. After weighing his options last year, he chose to stay and fight for his place, ultimately renewing his contract until 2030. That kind of commitment, especially from a young goalkeeper with so much potential, deserves to be rewarded with more than just rotational starts.
